Women's
Basketball Team Adavances To GSAC Championship Game
The Piedmont College
women's basketball team survived a late rally from LaGrange College
as the Lady Lions earned an 83-80 Great South Athletic Conference tournament
semifinal victory this afternoon in LaGrange, GA. Piedmont will now
play for a berth in the 2007 NCAA Division-III Tournament when the top-seeded
Lady Lions take on second-seeded Maryville College tomorrow at 2:00.
LC started off the game with a 7-2 lead as Lindsey Moore scored the
first four points of the game. The Lady Lions would gain the lead as
they would go on a 11-2 run to grab a four-point lead, 13-9 with 16:25
to go in the first half.
The Panthers would
hold the lead for most of the first half as they mounted an 8-0 on to
put them up nine, 30-21 after a LC three-pointer with 9:50 remaining
in the half. The Panthers would maintain the lead until 0:11 seconds
in the half as Beth Adcock would hit a three-pointer to give Piedmont
a 49-46 lead at intermission.
The second
half would continue the same way it ended, with Piedmont having momentum,
as they would open the half controlling the tempo of the game hanging
on to their single-digit lead.
The Lady Lions
would then go on a 13-4 run over the next six minutes to give them their
biggest lead of the game, 70-57 with 10 minutes remaining.
After two
made free throws by Sheena Trimiar with 0:11 seconds remaining, the
Panthers had one final shot to send the game into overtime, but Kellee
Scandrett's three-pointer, in what would have been exactly like the
men's finish in regulation, rimmed out to end the game.
The Lady Lions,
who improve to 17-7 on the year, were led by Beth Adcock with 24 points
and seven assists. Nikki Sosebee added 19 points and seven rebounds.
PC will take on second-seeded Maryville in tomorrow's GSAC Tournament
championship with tip-off set for 2:00. For the first-time ever the
tournament champion will receive an automatic berth into the 2007 NCAA
Division-III Tournament.
