Team Sweeps North Greenville In Home-Opener
In its 2007 home-opener
the Piedmont College softball team swept visiting NCAA Division-II opponent
North Greenville University in a doubleheader this afternoon at Walker
Field by the scores of 10-2 and 4-3. The Lady Lions exploded for 10
runs over the course of the final four innings in game one and held
on for a narrow one-run victory in game two after jumping ahead 4-0
in the third inning.
After going down
in order in the first inning of game one, PC notched a pair of runs
in the second and four runs in the third. The Lady Lions then tacked
on a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth to seal the eight-run
victory and end the game in the fifth inning. Emily Maxey led the offense
going a perfect 4-4 from the plate including an RBI and run scored.
Meredith Ray chipped in going 2-3 with a pair of RBI's while Lindsay
Drevlow went 1-3 with three RBI's. Ray was also dominate on the mound
going the distance allowing zero earned runs while striking out a season-high
eight hitters.
In game two the
Lady Lions scored a single run in the second and tacked on three more
in the third capped off by a Leah Della Torre two-out triple which brought
home two runs. NGU answered in the top of the fourth with two runs and
came within one in the seventh but Ray came in for the save and struck
out the final two hitters of the game.
The victories move
Piedmont to 3-2 overall. The women will take the field again on Saturday,
February 24th as they travel to the Maryville College Tournament in
Maryville, TN where they will take on Thomas More College in a doubleheader
beginning at 11:00.
