Women's Basketball Team Rallies Late For Overtime Victory At Roanoke
The Piedmont College women's basketball team rallied from six points
down with 1:11 remaining to force overtime and eventually post a 73-67
non-conference road win at Roanoke College this afternoon in Salem,
VA. The victory moves Piedmont to 11-6 overall as the game marked the
first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Holding on to a 60-54 lead with 1:11 left in regulation, the host Maroons
missed a shot on their end. After getting the defensive rebound, the
Lady Lions quickly pushed the ball up the court and found an open Sarah
Lane in the corner. Lane drilled the three-pointer and the Roanoke lead
was three, 60-57. After RC missed the front end of a one-and-one free
throw, the Lions took a three with 21 seconds to play. The shot missed,
but Beth Adock, who took the three, followed, got the rebound, made
the layup, and was fouled. She made the ensuing free throw with 20 seconds
to play and the game was tied at 60.
After the Maroons
were unable to get off a shot before the regulation buzzer sounded,
they took a quick four-point lead early in the overtime period. A 6-1
Piedmont run, capped by a Kayla Duncan layup, gave the visitors the
lead for good. Piedmont made five free throws in the final 30 seconds
to secure the victory.
Duncan had a game-high
21 points for Piedmont and also added 11 rebounds. Lane was the second
Lion to get a double-double, scoring 17 and adding 10 boards. Adcock
added 15 points and nine rebounds.
Piedmont will wrap
up the two-game swing tomorrow, Monday, January 29th, with a game versus
Hollins University starting at 6:00.
