Piedmont Pulls Off Shocker With 74-72 Road Win At CNU

The Piedmont College men’s basketball team opened the game with a 10-0 run and held off a late charge from host Christopher Newport University as the Lions earned a 74-72 non-conference road win tonight in Newport News, VA. CNU held an early-season national ranking by D3Hoops.com and is currently listed in the top-25’s Also Received Votes section.

PC led the entire contest until the Captains took their first lead of the game 72-70 at the 3:04 mark on two free throws from Davon Barton. The Lions would answer to score the game’s final four points and record four consecutive defensive stops to earn the big win. CNU’s Korey Lewis missed a fall-away jumper as time expired.

After a fast-paced first half in which the Lions led 45-42, PC turned up the defense after intermission limiting CNU to just 34% from the field. The Piedmont defense forced 16 turnovers on the night.

Piedmont’s Jake Baldwin led all scorers with game highs of 32 points and 13 rebounds. Tyler Whitlock added 19 points including 3-6 from three-point land. Mike Adams added a well-rounded game of nine points, five rebounds, and four assists.

CNU entered the game with winners of 39 of of their last 44 home games including a mark of 8-1 this season in the Freeman Center.

Piedmont will continue on its two-game road swing through the USA-South Athletic Conference tomorrow with a road game at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC with tip off set for 2:00.
