Maryville Holds Off Spirited Comeback From Men's Basketball Team For
87-84 Win
After shooting a mere 29% in the first half and trailing by eleven points
at intermission, the Piedmont College men's basketball team rallied
but could not overcome visiting Maryville College and dropped the decision
87-84 this afternoon in PC's Cave Arena. In the second half there were
eight lead changes and the Lions had a chance to tie with five seconds
on the clock but when two attempts rattled out as MC came away with
the three-point decision.
Maryville led by
as many as 19 (39-20) with just 3:41 remaining in the first half only
to see the Lions start begin their run puncutated with a 26-15 in begin
the second half and even the score at 54-54 with 12 minutes to go. From
there, the teams traded blows and Piedmont found themselves down 87-84
with 19 seconds remaining in regulation. Jake Baldwin missed a three-pointer
and after a Tyler Whitlock offensive rebound Mike Adams took a tri-fecta
with no time on the clock and the shot rattled out sealing the win for
Maryville.
Leading the way
for the Scots was junior Bo Mason with a game high 33 points, including
an impressive 9-11 from behind the three-point arc. Bobby Golden posted
20 points and nine rebounds and Bradley Blair also reached double digits
with 12 points.
Freshman Michael
Rubio notched a career-high 21 points including 3-3 from behind the
three-point line. Baldwin recorded 19 points while Adams chipped in
with 13 points. Also reaching double digits for PC was Jake Green and
Chuck McCoy who earned 11 and 10 points respectively.
The loss drops the
Lions to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the Great South Athletic Conference.
The men will return to action again on Wednesday, January 7th as they
travel to GSAC opponent Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL with tip
off scheduled for 8:00 CST.
