Men's Soccer Finished 2nd In GSAC Tournament
Seven Lions Earns GSAC Year-End
Honors
The Piedmont College men's soccer team
finished runner-up in the 2005 Great South Athletic Conference Men's
Soccer Championship Tournament this afternoon at LaGrange College. The
second-seeded Lions earned a trip to the championship match on Friday
by defeating third-seeded LaGrange College by the score of 2-0.
Against LaGrange, Drew Griffin connected
in the first-half at the 17:00 mark on an assist from Rob Nix for the
eventual game-winner. Griffin added an insurance goal at the 53:00 mark
on an assist from George Sandi. Patrick Ratigan recorded 13 saves en
route to victory.
In the championship game PC fell to Maryville
College 1-0. The Lions fell behind 1-0 at the 22:00 mark and were not
able to find the game's equalizer. Sandi, Brian Preston and Rob Nix
recorded shots on goal for the Lions.
For their efforts Griffin, Sandi, and
Diego Montoya were named to the GSAC 1st team All-Conference. Nix and
Ratigan were named to the league's 2nd team and Patrick Kaminski and
Blake Newton garnered as spot on the conference's All-Freshman team.
The men now stand at 10-9 overall and will participate in the National
Christian College Athletic Association South Region next weekend in
Montgomery, AL.
