Game Recap
Just four pitches into the top of the
first inning the Muskies got their offense going. Kim Tackett tripled
to deep center field to get the inning started. The next batter, Elaine
Haubner, reached on a Piedmont error, moving to second on the same play.
A deep fly out to center field scored Tackett from third and moved Haubner
up a base from second. Haubner scored the second run on a Kari Hoying
double to right, a hit that fell in between the Piedmont outfielder
and second baseman.
The Muskies erupted for eight runs in
the top of the second to jump out to a 10-0 lead. With no outs and one
runner on first, Amy Iammarino hit an opposite field homerun to give
the Muskies a 4-0 lead. The homer was the junior's third of the season.
Kari Hoying, Heather Fields, Randi Dance, and Julianne Johnston all
had RBI hits in the inning. Johnston's was a two-run homer just a little
to the right of straight-away center. That was her third of the season.
The Muskies would add one more run in the top of the fourth.
With runners on second and third in the
bottom of the fifth inning, May Alves reached base safely for the seventh
consecutive at-bat in the regional tournament, doubling to right field
to score Heather Denne from third and Mandy Fuston from second. Two
batters later, with Alves on third, Emily Maxey grounded out to third
to give Piedmont its third and final run.
