Piedmont College Softball Earns NCAA Division-III Regional Bid

The
Piedmont College softball team as earned an invitation to the 2006 NCAA
Division-III National Tournament as announced this afternoon from the
NCAA office. The bid is the first-ever for the PC softball program as
the Lady Lions will now travel to Salem, VA for an eight-team regional
May 11-14 hosted by Roanoke College at Moyer Sports Complex.
The Lady Lions will enter the regional as the fifth seed and will open
against fourth- seeded Transylvania University at noon with the winner
advancing to play top-seeded Muskingum College.
PC went 31-9 overall this season including a perfect 14-0 in Great South
Athletic Conference competition. The Lady Lions also went 24-5 against
NCAA Division-III South Region opponents.
Piedmont was selected as a Pool B participant and is one of 59 teams
playing in the National Tournament. Seven teams will compete at five
first-round sites and eight teams will compete at three first-round
sites for a total of eight first-round sites. All first-rounds will
use a double-elimination format.
The finals, hosted by Peace College, will be held May 19-23 at the Walnut
Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Thirty-five conferences were granted automatic qualification and six
independents (Pool B) were selected for the 2006 championship. The 18
remaining teams were selected on an at-large basis from automatic qualifying
conferences and the remaining independent institutions.
