Huntingdon Upsets Piedmont In GSAC Softball Championship
The Piedmont College softball team dropped
a 2-1 extra-inning game to third-seeded Huntingdon College in the championship
game of the 2006 Great South Athletic Conference Tournament this afternoon
at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA. The top-seeded Lady Lions advanced
to the conference championship game by eliminating second-seeded LaGrange
College earlier in the morning.
Against LaGrange, the Lady Lions scored three runs in the bottom of
the second inning as Meredith Ray picked up the victory with seven strikeouts
against six hits. Leah Della Torra was 2-4 from the plate with a pair
of RBI's.
In the championship, Piedmont scored the game's first run in the bottom
of the third, but HC rallied to score in the fourth and the game-winner
in the first extra inning. Heather Denne and Emily Maxey combined to
record four hits in six plate appearances to lead the offense.
Piedmont returns to action on Tuesday, April 25th with a home doubleheader
against nationallly-ranked Emory University beginning at 5:00 at PC's
Walker Field.
