In a closely contested baseball game the Piedmont College baseball team
defeated visiting Emory University, currently ranked #1 in the NCAA
Division-III national rankings, by the score of 5-1. Both teams traded
single runs in the first inning and the score remained tied until the
Lions scored four unanswered runs in the bottom of the eighth en route
to the victory.
After allowing a solo run in the top of
the first inning the Lions quickly answered in the home half. Travis
Hunt reached to start the inning on a error and two batters later was
driven in on with an RBI single from Evan Nissley.
In the bottom of the eighth senior Walker
Searcy drove in the eventual game-winner with an RBI single. Andy House
and Mike Santowski followed with RBI singles and the Lions tacked on
one more insurance run on a wild pitch.
Senior Billy Secor threw a complete-game
to record the victory allowing only six hits and striking out six opposing
hitters. Over the past four seasons Secor has gone a perfect 4-0 against
the Emory.
The victory moves PC to 19-11 overall.
These two teams are set to meet again twice more on the weekend non-conference
series with the Lions at home for game two and the Eagles playing the
host in game three.
