Lady Lions Split With #22 Emory University
The Piedmont College softball team traveled
to Atlanta, GA this afternoon and took on Emory University, currently
ranked #22 in the national poll, and tallied a split taking game one
5-4 in 12 innings but falling in the finale 8-0. Game one was closely
contested as both teams answered each other with runs until the 12th
inning when PC scored two and held Emory to only one.
The Lady Lions scored first in game one
in the top of the fourth but was answered in the bottom of the sixth.
PC and Emory traded solo runs in both the eigth and ninth innings and
entered the 12th tied at three runs apiece. May Alves plated the first
run with a single to rightfield and after a stolen base scored on the
eventual game-winning hit from pitcher Meredith Ray.
On the mound Ray pitched all twelve innings
to record the victory and move her overall record to 12-1. In the game
she recorded six strikeouts and scattered seven hits allowing only one
earned run.
In game two it was all Emory as PC was
only able to muster one hit. Emory scored in four different innings
and tallied the eight-run slaughter rule in the sixth inning.
The split ended a nine-game winning streak
for Piedmont and moves the Lady Lions to 18-4 overall. PC will return
to action again on Wednesday, April 5th as they travel to Wesleyan College
in Macon, GA with game time set for 5:00.
