Piedmont Posts GSAC Sweep Over LaGrange
With a potential Great South Athletic
Conference regular-season championship on the line, the Piedmont College
softball team swept visiting LaGrange College tonight at Walker Field
by the scores of 4-0 and 3-2. PC pounded out 21 hits in their 12 innings
on offense and held the vistiors to a mere eight hits including only
one hit in game one.
On the mound Meredith Ray pitched the
entire doubleheader allowing only one earned run while striking out
nine. She improves her overall record to 11-1 and a perfect 7-0 in GSAC
competition.
Lindsay Drevlow led the offense by going
5-6 with three doubles and two runs scored. Ray helped her own cause
by going 2-6 with two runs scored and an RBI and Heather Denne went
3-7.
In the opening game the Lady Lions scored
two in the second inning and tacked on two insurance runs in the fourth.
The second game was much closer as LaGrange put runners at second and
third in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Ray was able to induce
an RBI groundout to second baseman May Alves and then strike out the
next hitter with the tying run only sixty feet away.
The victories move PC to 17-3 overall
and 12-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference. The Lady Lions will
travel to Atlanta, GA to take on NCAA Division-III South Region powerhouse
Emory University on Sunday, April 2nd with the doubleheader set to begin
at 1:00.
