Piedmont Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader At Emmanuel
The Piedmont College softball team pushed
across three runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to
salvage a season-opening split against Emmanuel College Monday afternoon
in Franklin Springs, GA. Emmanuel won the first game 3-1.
With two outs in the seventh, Emily Maxey
tripled to right center. May Alves followed with a single to bring home
Maxey and to give the Lady Lions a 4-3 lead. After a single by Marissa
Harding, Leah Della Torre stepped up and drilled a double to left center
and scored Alves and Harding.
Emmanuel rallied in the bottom of the
inning after a homerun by Heather Vaughn, but Meredith Ray induced a
pair of pop ups to end the game.
In the first game, Emmanuel scored two
runs in the first inning and then held on for the 3-1 win.
PC pulled within one when Megan Day was
hit by a pitch and pinch runner Ashley Gragg scored on a single by Mandy
Fuston, before Emmanuel went back ahead by two in the fifth.
Day led PC at the plate on the afternoon
with four hits, while Alves and Harding had three hits. Della Torre
and Fuston both had two RBI’s.
Meredith Ray took the hard luck loss in
the first game after pitching seven innings and giving up just two earned
runs. She came back in the second game and took the win in relief of
freshman Lindsay Drevlow.
The Lady Lions will be back in action
Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Central, SC to take on Southern
Wesleyan University in a 3:00 non-conference doubleheader.
