Former Piedmont College Baseball Player Killed In
Automobile Accident
Stonington, IL -
Former Piedmont College baseball player Ronnie Perona,
a 2005 graduate, was
killed in an automobile accident July 2nd in Stonington, IL.
Perona, the son of Ronald and Julie Perona Sr. of Owaneco,
IL, graduated Cum Laude from Piedmont College earlier this
summer with a degree in Business Management.
Perona graduated from Taylorville High School and attended
Springfield College before transferring to Piedmont. Along
with being a part of the baseball team, he was also a member
of the Phi Theta Kappa fraternity. Perona had recently
accepted a position as a staff accountant with the firm of
Kerber, Eck & Braeckel, LLP, of Taylorsville, IL.
The funeral service for Perona, 22, will be held Saturday at
the Taylorsville High School baseball diamond.
Perona was one of three people who died in the two-vehicle
crash Saturday night in Stonington along with Ronald
Laurence J. Gillespie, 74, of Stonington; and George
Gillespie Jr., 80, of Stonington.
This spring, Perona was a key player on the Lions' baseball
team, appearing in 37 of the team's 45 games, including
making 35 starts as an outfielder. He hit .218 in 124
at-bats including a pair of doubles and a triple.
Perona drove in 14 runs on the year and was 7-10 in the
stolen base department and had an on-base percentage of
.358. As an outfielder, he made only two errors during the
year while recording 93 putouts. |
