The upcoming Piedmont College Wind Ensemble concert will have a special meaning for the thousands of band students who studied under Dr. Archie Sharretts during his 35 years in public and private education.
Ensemble director Vickie Pinson said all former students of Sharretts are invited to the free concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., April 18, at the college's Center for Worship and Music in Demorest. A reception for Sharretts will follow the concert. The ensemble includes Piedmont students as well as area high school and community musicians. The concert will include a variety of Sousa marches and other concert band pieces, Pinson said.
Sharretts served in the U.S. Air Force Band from 1948 to 1954 before entering Florida State University to earn a bachelor's degree in music. He later earned a master's and doctorate from FSU. He taught band in Stephens County from 1956 to 1987, and he has also taught at Piedmont, Truett-McConnell, and Toccoa Falls colleges. He was conductor of the Toccoa Symphony Orchestra from 1976 to 2000.
