Piedmont music department presenting an Opera Workshop

11.16.2011

Piedmont’s Opera Workshop class will perform a free concert of Opera and Musical Theatre at 5 p.m., Nov. 18, in Brooks Hall, located downstairs in the Chapel. The group will present 13 scenes, ranging from Mozart to Broadway hits, with each of the 13 students directing one of the scenes.

Selections will include scenes from musicals and operas including “The Magic Flute” by Mozart, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with music by Benjamin Britten, “Into the Woods” by Stephen Sondheim, and “Carousel” by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

“If you have never been to a full opera performance, this gives you the opportunity to see a variety of different scenes,” said Opera Workshop professor Jonathan Pilkington. “I think it will be very entertaining for the audience.” Most of the students taking the class are earning a bachelor of arts (B.A.) in music performance. Pilkington said students are able to apply a lot of what they learn in other music classes because for Opera Workshop they have to know theory, voice, and music history.
