What is an online course?
Piedmont College now offers both online and =
hybrid
courses taught over the Internet. These courses will have the same course
number, credits earned, and content covered as those in face-to-face
classes. All online courses b=
egin
on the same date as traditional classes and end on the same date.
Who takes online courses?
Any student who ha=
s been
accepted into admission at Piedmont College and is in good academic standin=
g. Your technical skills should inclu=
de the
ability to use a mouse, to use word processing software, to download and up=
load
files, and to read and send e-mail.
Who teaches online courses?
All courses, onlin=
e,
hybrid, or traditional are taught by full-time, and/or adjunct Piedmont fac=
ulty
from the various schools. Onl=
ine
faculty teach traditional courses and recognize the difference in an online
learning environment, in that, they must serve as a guide or resource for t=
heir
online students. Online facul=
ty will
utilize WebCT to deliver lectures, course materials, discussion questions,
tests, and assignments. You w=
ill
use the site, or email, to communicate with your professor and submit
assignments. The critical
difference is that the professor cannot see your reactions placing the
responsibility on you to ask questions and to seek help!

Should I take an online course?
Students taking on=
line
or hybrid coursework should consider that online courses require more
communication and online tasks than normally used in face-to-face
coursework. Successful studen=
ts
commit to the self-discipline required to meet assignment deadlines,
communication timelines, and accessing the online coursework a minimu=
m
of three times a week. To ens=

that you have access to the Internet, the necessary technology, and the
potential for success complete the Piedmont College Student Online Learning
Tutorial before registration.
Will I have to come to =
campus
during my online course work?
Some online courses may re=
quire
that you come to campus on occasion for class. Any course labeled on the Re=
gistrar’s
Schedule as ONLINE indicates t=
hat no
physical attendance is mandatory. In some cases online courses may re=
quire
proctored exams. Contact your
instructor for information on proctored examination arrangements. Hybrid courses do require personal
attendance in class for the specified number of classes found on the syllab=
us.

online course requires some initial communication between the professor and
yourself during the first week.

What do I need to take a course online?
You need a computer at home (or wherever you=
plan
to do your course work), a personal e-mail address, and a direct connection=
to
the Internet. Specifically, the minimum requirements are:
Ø Windows 95
Ø Pentium® processor, 200 MHz
Ø 16 MB of RAM
Ø 28.8 kbps modem
Ø Sound card and speakers
Internet Service Provider (ISP): An I=
SP is
a company that can provide you with the software necessary for getting onto=
the
