Study Abroad Frequently Asked Questions
Who may study abroad for a semester at the University of
Nottingham?
Piedmont College students in good standing with the College
who have completed a minimum of 45 credit hours and have an
overall GPA of 3.25 may apply to the Semester Abroad
Committee.
Is it necessary to have traveled internationally before
planning a semester abroad?
No, it is not necessary, but highly recommended that
students have traveled prior to applying for a semester
abroad. Students are prepared to travel and attend the
University through our training sessions which include
presentations from students who have previously attended the
University.
What are the costs for the semester abroad at the University
of Nottingham?
Students pay Demorest tuition and room and board charges to
attend the University. There are also the costs of a round
trip airline ticket, additional insurance policy costs, the
cost of a passport, and sufficient funds for school
supplies, and other fees the University may impose. Students
must also have available funds to support their lifestyle
while in the UK.
How will I get acclimated to the University and the British
education system?
First, students participate in orientations sessions on the
Piedmont campus the semester prior to departing. Upon
arrival in Nottingham or Ningbo, students participate in the
University’s Welcome Program which occurs over the first few
days after arrival. During this time, students are guided
through the University course registration process. By the
time classes start, students are settled into their
accommodations, familiar with the University resources, and
know their way around campus.
How many courses will I need to take as a University
student?
Students take three to five courses while studying at the
University as they would at Piedmont College in order to
maintain full time status. Piedmont College advisors work
closely with students in choosing appropriate courses that
will help to complete the students program of study upon
their return to the College.
How do University courses differ from courses taught at
Piedmont College?
The University system of education requires less class time,
fewer course evaluations, and a much shorter semester.
Typically, students will go to class for a short time once
or twice per week. Students are expected to engage in
content research and reading on their own time. Most courses
require one major paper at midterm and a comprehensive final
exam or another major paper due at the end of the semester.
Class sizes vary from 20 to 300 students.
How will my University grades transfer to Piedmont College?
The University sends Piedmont College a transcript of
semester grades and they will be posted to your Piedmont
College transcript. University grades are not be added into
your cumulative GPA. However, failing courses at the
University may reduce scholarship awards for future
semesters at Piedmont College.
